TORONTO - Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar will face the media today in New York to answer questions about why he took the field in Saturday's game against Boston with a homophobic slur written in Spanish under his eyes.

The team and Major League Baseball say they are investigating the incident. Escobar will be speaking with the media at 3:30 p.m. ET Tuesday at Yankee Stadium, along with Alex Anthopoulos, John Farrell and Luis Riviera.

Both Major League Baseball and the Blue Jays team have been in contact with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

"We've had conversations with the Blue Jays and MLB, but we can't say much beyond that until after the press conference," said GLAAD director of news and field media Aaron McQuade.

Several pictures posted online show Escobar with the message written in his eye-black, a type of sticker players wear under their eyes to reduce the sun's glare.

The words under the 29-year-old Cuban's eyes were "TU ERE MARICON" which can be translated as "You are a faggot."

The photos stirred up controversy on Twitter and several sports blogs Monday afternoon. Escobar was trending on Twitter by early evening.

"The Toronto Blue Jays do not support discrimination of any kind nor condone the message displayed by Yunel Escobar during Saturday's game," the team said in a statement.

"The club takes this situation seriously and is investigating the matter."

The Blue Jays added Escobar, general manager Alex Anthopoulos, manager John Farrell and coach Luis Rivera would speak with media at Yankee Stadium in New York on Tuesday.

MLB spokesman Pat Courtney also confirmed the commissioner's office is looking into the reports.

The Jays were off Monday before opening a three-game series against the Yankees.
