MONTREAL - Montreal Alouettes running back Brandon Whitaker is out for the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The Alouettes say the 27-year-old will require surgery after suffering the injury in Montreal's 28-17 home win over Saskatchewan on Sunday.

Whitaker is fourth in the CFL in rushing through 12 weeks of the season, putting up 631 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 516 receiving yards with five touchdowns.

The native of Edmond, Okla., led the league in rushing last season with 1,381 yards, scoring four touchdowns. He added 638 yards and six touchdowns through the air.

The injury comes just before the Alouettes' big home game Saturday afternoon against Toronto. Montreal leads the second-place Argonauts by one game in the CFL East Division standings.
